Welcome to TechFirst: Building the Next Generation of Digital Talent
Updated: Sep 17

Technology is changing the way we live, learn and work. From artificial intelligence and cybersecurity to software development and emerging technologies, the demand for people with the right digital skills has never been greater.
TechFirst is here to help young people discover their potential, develop valuable technology skills and see where a career in tech could take them.
So, what is TechFirst?
TechFirst is the UK Government’s flagship tech skills programme, designed to open up pathways into the UK’s growing technology sector and create opportunities for people across the country.
Building on the success of the established CyberFirst programme, TechFirst expands the focus beyond cybersecurity to a much wider range of technologies and digital careers.
At its heart, TechFirst is about connecting young people with technology, education and the opportunities that can turn an interest into a future career.
The ambition is significant: TechFirst aims to reach one million young people in secondary schools, with a particular focus on ensuring that students from disadvantaged schools have access to these opportunities.
Why does TechFirst matter?
The technology sector is developing at an incredible pace. New technologies are creating new industries, transforming existing careers and changing the skills employers need.
But having access to technology isn't the same as having the opportunity to understand it.
TechFirst aims to help bridge that gap.
Through opportunities in schools, online learning, competitions, careers activities and connections with industry, young people can begin to explore what technology really means, and, importantly, where they might fit into it.
Whether a student is already passionate about coding or AI, curious about how technology works, or simply hasn't considered a career in tech before, TechFirst is designed to help them take that first step.
What does TechFirst offer schools?
For schools and colleges, TechFirst provides opportunities to help students:
Develop their technology skills
Build confidence using artificial intelligence
Discover careers in emerging and frontier technologies
Gain exposure to the world of work
Connect with employers and technology professionals
Explore local training and career opportunities
The programme is delivered locally through Regional Delivery Partners, who work with schools, colleges, employers, local authorities and community organisations to bring opportunities into their regions. This local approach means activities can be connected to the skills and career opportunities available within each area.
TechFirst is also introducing TechFirst School recognition, with Bronze, Silver and Gold awards available for schools that are leading the way in technology and computing education.
It's about more than coding
When people hear the words “technology career”, they might immediately think of programmers or software developers.
But the world of tech is much bigger than that.
Artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data, semiconductors, digital design, engineering, research and many other areas are creating exciting opportunities for the next generation.
TechFirst is about helping young people understand that there isn't one route into technology, and there isn't one type of person who belongs in tech.
By introducing students to different technologies, industries and career paths at an early stage, the programme can help them make more informed decisions about their futures.
Creating opportunities for everyone
A key part of TechFirst is widening access, representation and opportunity within the technology sector.
The programme aims to support 400,000 students in disadvantaged schools across the UK, helping ensure that opportunities reach young people who may otherwise have fewer opportunities to engage with the technology sector.
This is important because talent exists everywhere.
Opportunity doesn't always.
TechFirst is helping to change that by bringing technology experiences, skills development and connections with industry closer to young people across the UK.
What's next for TechFirst?
TechFirst is being rolled out across the UK, with the programme aiming to have a presence in every region and home nation from September 2026.
An online TechFirst learning platform is also launching to help students develop their Computing knowledge and discover the careers it can lead to, alongside national competitions and other opportunities throughout the year.
And the opportunities don't stop when students leave school.
TechFirst also includes university scholarships, postgraduate opportunities, doctoral support, industry connections and initiatives designed to help people progress into the technology sector.
TechFirst in Yorkshire & Humber
For us, this represents an exciting opportunity for young people across Yorkshire & Humber.
The technology industry is full of possibilities, but discovering those possibilities early can make a huge difference.
That's why we're proud to be part of the TechFirst journey, helping schools and young people connect with the skills, experiences, employers and opportunities that can help shape the future of our region's digital economy.
The future of technology is being built now.
And the next generation should have the opportunity to help build it.
Welcome to TechFirst.
Let's build the next generation of digital talent together.
